Magic and Murder: Chapter 24
Zephyr whistled in amazement as he and Talia walked through the gates leading to the headquarters of the Supernatural Investigation Bureau. The building was tall, built of black stone, and ominous in size. They really meant business to have a headquarters like this.
Talia opened the front door and entered with Zephyr in tow. She approached the front desk and flashed her badge to the receptionist.
"Detective Natalia Reinhardt."
The receptionist nodded before moving her gaze to Zephyr. She raised her eyebrows. Talia realized that she had forgotten to include Zephyr in her check in.
"Oh, and this is Zephyr. He's my guest."
"Okay, have him s

Magic and Murder: Chapter 23
Talia and Zephyr stood at the platform waiting for the next train. Following the night of the full moon, the mayor's daughter joined the pack, and much to Zephyr's delight, it was announced that the town would be constructing a public library. The library was to be dedicated to Zephyr and Talia for their bravery in solving the murder case and for the mercy shown to the mayor.
Talia looked over at Zephyr. "So, are you sure you want to go to the SIB headquarters?"
"What reason do I have not to go? I already told you I'll be your partner, plus it'll give me something more interesting to do than sell books." He raised an eyebrow and looked at h
Zephyr sat in the local coffee shop, reading in the newspaper about the most recent murder. It appeared that the killer had left his calling card once again with the victim, and the body was torn to pieces as all the others had been. That is, if the murderer could even be called a person. It seemed more like some kind of beast. A demon maybe?
He stood up from his seat, folding the newspaper and walking out of the shop. It was already dark outside, with only a few people out on the streets. With the string of murders in town, Zephyr was almost surprised to see so many people, especially the lone woman across the street.
Talia examined the pe
Talia stopped. What was in it for him, she hadn't really considered it. There wasn't much chance that the satisfaction of stopping a murderer would be enough. Then it came to her.
"There is a large bounty out on this killer. I'll split it with you 50/50."
Zephyr quirked an eyebrow at her suggestion.
"Define large?"
Honestly he couldn't care less about the money or even helping her. He was mostly doing this out of boredom, but a little reward at the end would be pretty nice too.
She smiled, it seemed that had captured his attention. She wasn't in it for the money anyway, so if that's what she had to use to get some help then she'd use it.
The next morning, Zephyr sat in the corner of the coffee shop, reading a book with a notebook in front of him, writing notes as he read. The codes the killer left were very interesting to him, and he looked forward to looking at the cipher again once Talia arrived. He sipped on his coffee.
Talia arrived carrying the box full of case files. She quickly found Zephyr in the corner of the shop sipping on a coffee. She approached him and dropped the box onto the table.
"This thing is heavier than it looks." She was breathing heavily. "I'm going to grab a coffee, you're welcome to start looking through these again."
"Just sit down. I saw you wal
Talia slept all the way through the night. However, her dreams were strangely dark. She awoke slightly frightened. It took her a few moments to realize where she was. She groggily walked into the main room of the house.
The house was silent save for Talia's footsteps across the floor. Zephyr was nowhere to be seen although it was around the time they had met at the coffee shop the morning before. Talia looked around, confused.
"Zephyr? Are you here?"
No response came, so she elected to sit back and wait. She noticed a radio sitting in the corner and figured that she should listen to the news; maybe something new had happened in her investi
"You're working with someone? You know how sensitive this information is, don't you? Who is it?"
"He's only helping me decode the note, there's nothing to worry about. His name is Zephyr, but just look at what we've deciphered."
Talia pulled out the notes that Zephyr and her had made from the day before and handed them to the sergeant.
He took the notes and glanced through them before returning his attention to her.
"Zephyr you say? Tall, quiet, a little suspicious? That the guy who helped you with this?"
"Yeah that's him."
He sure did seem stuck on her dealings with Zephyr. Talia really would prefer to move on to the new developments i
Zephyr heard Talia come back into the house and sat up in bed. His head was killing him, but that was nothing new. He coughed harshly for a moment before shakily getting out of bed. The last thing he wanted to do was talk to anyone, but he assumed he would have little choice if he ran into Talia on his way to the kitchen. He slowly walked out of his room and towards the kitchen for a drink.
Talia had just set down the new case file when Zephyr entered the room. He looked frighteningly ill, and Talia couldn't help but worry about him.
"How are you doing Zephyr?"
He wanted so badly to ignore her question. Hearing any sound just caused the pa
Talia awoke the next morning still in the chair with the book sitting in her lap. She yawned loudly and stood up stretching. This caused the book to fall to the floor with a loud thump.
Zephyr walked into the room shortly after, the blanket draped over his shoulders. He rubbed his eyes and yawned as he walked in.
"Are you alright?"
His voice was no longer hoarse, and he didn't seem as irritable as the day before.
"Yes, yes, I'm fine. Are you alright? You look a lot better."
Talia picked the book up off the ground and returned it to the shelf. She was slightly embarrassed that she hadn't made it to her bedroom.
Zephyr was silent for a mo
Talia sat back in her chair. She hadn't expected the killer to be a demon, and she wasn't prepared to take one on.
"Are you sure?" She asked quietly.
Zephyr considered what he was about to say to her. How could he really explain all of this? He took a breath.
"Yes... Especially if you think I'm being framed..."
Talia saw the trouble that Zephyr was having talking about this. She began to reconsider the fact that he might not be human. It would make sense that he wasn't – the strange way he acted, his lack of appetite – it all pointed towards him being supernatural in some way.
"Zephyr, are you a demon?"
Zephyr's eyes shot up
